Podcast Alert!
Last month I sat down with Kimberli J. Lewis, the radio show and podcast host of Leadership Beyond Borders, to talk about writing fiction with a message.Find the interview here: https://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/133559/fireside-chat-with-suzanne-brockmann-nytimes-bestselling-author
Fiction gives us the chance to provide power to or destroy cultural values, sensitivities, current or past issues and much more. We can learn from what characters do, where they are, how they behave and much more. Fiction is not just about a good story but also what we take away from the story. In this episode, we have a chance to talk with Suzanne Brockmann, the New York Times bestselling romance author. We talk about how she came about writing fiction that focused on Navy SEAL hero’s before they became popular in all kinds of fiction. Suzanne not only was writing about Navy SEALs before it was popular, but her books are also informative. Weaved into her stories are history lessons, cultural values, diversity, family relations and social-economic issues that make us think. In this episode, Suzanne talks about her writing, characters, and her new movie coming out on Netflix just in time for Halloween 2021.
The radio interview airs today, October 19, 2021, at noon ET. After that, it will be archived and you can listen to it as a podcast at the link above!
I recently gave an interview to Les Romantiques, the fantastique French romance webzine! The timing was extra perfect for me, because I'd spent much of the late summer glomming (and loving!) the French series Call My Agent on Netflix. I took a few years of French back in middle and high school, so watching this show in French with English subtitles was intriguing. (Amazing how much I could understand!)Likewise, I found it fascinating to see such an extensive interview about my romance novels translated into French! (So *that's* what it sounds like, in French, when I rant about systemic racism, white supremacy, and Neo-Nazis! Oh yeah. I always have a lot to say about that! And it sounds pretty solid in French, too!)Here's the link to the website, if reading French is your thang (or if you just want to look at the webzine for the pretty pictures!) http://www.lesromantiques.com/Webzine/Webzinesept2021.pdf
Recommended ReadsLike many readers out there, I've been in a bit of a rut for a while, but I've recently read two romance novels that I loved and want to share with you: The Dating Playbook by Farrah Rochon and Pick Me by May Archer. Both books are low-angst contemporary rom-coms--which really works for me at this point in time. (Too much real angst and danger in the real world! Yikes!)
The Dating Playbook is the second book in Farrah Rochon's charming Boyfriend Project series. I really loved book #1, The Boyfriend Project, and I was eagerly anticipating this second installment. I was not surprised (I'm a fan of all things Farrah) when it completely held up.This fun series is about three women who meet and instantly click because they're all dating the same cheating loser of a man. They wisely all ditch the guy and keep the newfound friendships. It's funny and fresh, and I really really loved the first book (I cannot say that enough!), where one of the three new friends finds romance in her workplace. In The Dating Playbook, the second of the friends, personal trainer Taylor, gets herself into truly entertaining fake-boyfriend situation with a former NFL football player, and the fun continues! (And... I'm back to waiting for the third and final book in the series!!)
But while I've been waiting, I read the delightful Pick Me by May Archer--another low-angst contemporary rom-com, this one with a hero-and-a-hero. Fans of the grumpy/sunshine trope take note! This book is So! Much! Fun!I loved Pick Me's two charming heroes, I loved the funky, inclusive and extremely welcoming small town in Vermont where the book is set, and I really loved May Archer's lively writing voice.May is a new-to-me-author, so I've got quite a bit of her backlist to look forward to--but Pick Me is the first book in her new series called The Sunday Brothers, and I'm ready for the sequels! Books on my TBR pile:
An ARC of Fast Acting by Adele Buck (#4 in the Center Stage series)
The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki (her A Tale for The Time Being is one of my top three all time favorite books ever!)
Bombshell by Sarah MacLean
Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn
While Justice Sleeps by Stacey Abrams
